Hello all, I am finally starting my blog. Previously I had posted my reviews and articles at abhik mazumdar’s site, http://debatesangeet.blogspot.com/. You can find them in the archives. I have always been amazed that there is so little written about N. Indian classical music in English, especially anything contemporary. The allergy of the newspapers in Mumbai to anything to do with serious music, unless it is Western is pathetic. Carnatic music has the wonderful magazine Sruti , http://www.sruti.com/ , but in the North, nothing. Here i do not want to be too serious all the time. I will be posting a review of Deepak Raja’s book on khayal. It will also be coming out in the forthcoming issue of the Journal of Indian Musicological Society. I started writing about music, with Joep’s encouragement by reviewing Janki Bhakle’s book about V.D. Paluskar and Pt. Bhatkhande, Two Men and Music. I didn’t feel at the time that there was much critical analysis of the book, which I did not like very myself, and if I didn’t write what I felt, nobody else would and that would be considered the gospel truth, considering the prestige of the author and publication. I again felt the same about Deepak Raja’s book and have thus written a long analytic review.
